The Vilnius University (VU, founded in 1579) is one of the oldest universities in Europe and the largest teaching and research institution in Lithuania. VU is currently involved in more than 20 European Commission funded projects, has partnership agreements with 110 universities all over the world. Institute of Theoretical Physics and Astronomy of Vilnius University (ITPA VU) is the main research institution in astrophysics in Lithuania. Scientists of the institute have experience in working with results of space missions such as Hipparcos, SOHO, Kepler, are involved in preparations of the GAIA space mission. The Astronomical observatory of ITPA operates the largest in the Nordern Europe optical telescope and is the main training center of young astronomers in the Nordic-Baltic region. The ITPA has organised 5 Nordic Research courses in Lithuania (1999 2012), a European Research course of OPTICON in 2011 and a number of other courses funded by European Commission and National bodies.
